Alliance International Hockey Club
It is with great pleasure that we introduce the Alliance International Hockey Club probably a unique club in world sport.
‘Alliance’ was set up in 2002 for the Grand Masters World Cup in Kuala Lumpur to meet the needs of several players who wanted to take part but whose country did not have sufficient players to form a team of their own.
The club’s principal of ‘providing a platform to play international hockey for players unable to form a national team in their country or to players not selected for their national team’ continues to this day and the club boasts around 180 members from 30 different countries around the world.
In Glasgow, Alliance will be fielding 6 teams in the Trophy Tournament. A ladies Grand Masters and Great Grand Masters and a men’s side in each of the 4 age groups. In the ‘younger’ 3 categories (O60, O65 and O70) the club has waiting lists for people who wanted to play but were too late in getting their names down!
The make-up of the squads for the competition in Glasgow is truly ‘international’ with 14 countries represented including Canada, Ghana, Greece, Italy, Japan, New Zealand and Portugal. They have even recruited the services of a lady umpire with Olympic and World Cup experience.
Such a wide representation of countries can only enhance the cultural exchanges at our tournament. We are looking forward to meeting the members of ‘Alliance’ in August.
